Cases of large scale adoption
About 20 rural youths were trained in cultivation of Mentha, their full package of practices were given to them. Apart from this, there were given the technology of organic farming including vermicomposting. After getting the training, they borrowed loans from banks through Department of Industries for establishment of Mentha Distillation Plant. Out of 20 farmers, 9 are having their own distillation plants, the rest are using these plants for oil extraction and they are getting more than 3500 per acre from this business. The are under Mentha, Tulsi and other Medicinal Plants are increasing day by day.
With constant endeavors and a rigorous journey in the fields of Agriculture and Education, a raw man with no experience and expertise could establish himself as a Chairman of “Institute of Human Development Welfare and Care,” a non-government organization fully dedicated to the development of the farming community at the grass root level. Now, with certain training on Cultivation and Processing of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants from Jaipur, Rajasthan, Lucknow and Pusa and financial assistance from Rural Innovation Fund from NABARD under the project, “Stevia Cultivation and Marketing,” altogether 60 farmers from 10 Farmers’ Club started growing Stevia and selling the the dried leaves directly in the Patna Market along Green Tea (a product of the NGO with Ajwain and lemon grass). The NGO earned a net profit of 3.5 lakhs in the first year and 5.5 lakhs in the second year; thereby the associated farmers could get Rs. 5000-7000 as an additional income without no extra effort and investment. Again, under NABARD’s FPO programme, Mr. Tiwary started producing pellets and tablets from Stevia apart from powered Stevia under the brand name, Stevioleaf and Herboleaf, which is being used as a supplement of sugar for diabetic patients. Marketing is at hand with overwhelming profits. Now, his parents feel proud of their son leading a prestigious life with Money Making Manoj.

Technology Details | He evolved relay cropping of vegetables with paddy [Brinjal-Tomato-cucumber/long melon-Paddy]. Sowing of brinjal in nursery was done by 15th August and transplanting in the main field by 15th September at 6 feet ×3 feet distance on permanent beds. Seedlings of Tomato were raised in a separate nursery in last week of November and transplanting was done in between the rows of brinjal at a distance of 4 feet. The plant geometry was so maintained that there was no shading effect of Brinjal on tomato. Now cucumber and long Melon was sown directly in between the plants of tomato at a distance of 2 feet by 25th February or the atmospheric temperature was around 22-23°c. The creepers were allowed to grow on the ground and no staking was done. To prevent the fruit from soil contact natural mulch of grass, weeds and paddy straw was done. | |
Practical Utility of Innovation | For managing probable nocturnal insect pests inhabiting in the grass mulch, Neem based insecticide was used prepared by the farmers himself. Sesbania was grown in the field by 25-30th May and it was incorporated in the field at 45 days duration irrespective of monsoon break with supplemental irrigation. Short duration paddy was then taken in the field after puddling. Thus farmers get could get gross economic return of Rs. 60000.00 from one ha of land. |

Technology details | A Guava based Multiple Cropping System taking 4 crops per year apart from main crop of guava. He established guava garden keeping planting geometry in such a manner that there was easy movement of tractor operated farm implements and no shading effect of guava canopy on the agricultural crops. Regular training and pruning of guava was done was done to keep the canopy well maintained. Four rows kharif maize was planted in between the two rows of guava. All the farm operations were done as usual based on maize recommendations. After the harvest of maize, Toria was taken that could be harvested by 15th of January. Now summer vegetables like bottle gourd + Lady’s finger was taken. Banana was planted all around the guava garden to give a protective wall and to act as wind break apart from giving additional yield. | He evolved relay cropping of vegetables with paddy [Brinjal-Tomato-cucumber/long melon-Paddy]. Practical utility of innovation | During summer months, natural mulch of paddy straw was applied in the bottle gourd + Lady’s finger and worms were released in the field for in situ vermicomposting, moisture retention and nutrient supply for longer periods. Thus Shri Umeshwar Singh could get a Gross Income of more than 80000.00 per ha from the guava garden. | For managing probable nocturnal insect pests inhabiting in the grass mulch, Neem based insecticide was used prepared by the farmers himself.
