Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Saran was established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in March, 2006 under the administrative control of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Samastipur; Bihar observing the possibilities and potentialities of growing cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables as well as Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in the alluvial fertile tracts of Saran district. Though the centre is a new establishment, it has proved to be one of the leading centers for front line extension education in the district mandated to organize vocational trainings in agriculture and allied vocations with emerging advances in agriculture research on regular basis. The centre is also dedicated to organize and conduct front line demonstrations in consultation with subject matter specialist for testing, refining and documenting region specific and sustainable land use system.
Before actual launching of the technical programme in Saran district, Participatory Rural Appraisal and Rapid Rural Appraisal in the selected villages were done to know the socio-economic condition of the people in general and to understand the existing practices of the farmers. This enabled the KVK to identify the technological gaps and need assessment of the farmers. This provided the basic skeleton for weaving the operational modality like on-farm-trials, demonstration and training by the KVK. The KVK has an excellent expertise in bringing the modern technologies to and product production procedures at the farmers doorstep with the help of various activities. The KVK today has sufficient resources to impart training skills for not only the farmers but also the rural youth. The training schedule typically incorporates the existing needs and problems of the farmers for making a positive impact. The trainings are conducted both at the on-campus and off-campus locations. It invariably emphasizes on providing both the short term as well as long durational courses specifically to impart practical orientation to these courses. The KVK has started the instructional units for not only imparting the skills but also for providing the critical inputs as per the demand and need of the farmers.
Small Steps Big Success
Indra Mohan Singh was leading a peaceful and prosperous life in his native village Malkhachak, a small village in Dighwara Block of Saran District, with plenty resources available at his farm. But suddenly one of his legs was severely injured in 2009 in a major road accident and he was bed trodden for about two and a half years. All his bank balances and agricultural set ups were exhausted meeting a series of operations and hospitalizations expenses. Even hoping for a permanent disability, as doctors once said, Indra Mohan Singh was not exhausted at all with all positive thoughts as he has to pull his family ahead and his wife stood behind him as a better half and proved, “where there is will there is a way.”Dr. Sanjay Singh, a man from his neighboring village and a Scientist in RAU Pusa introduced him to Dr. Dayaram, a crusader of Mushroom Revolution in Bihar where he could get his initial training.
